I feel like these guys have been around since people discover fire, found out that drums and guitars sound awesome together, just huddled around in caves jamming and eating raw zebras ala bear grylis, because it sounds like every band took some influence from them. Formed in 05, lifelover is actually adept at combining the best parts of your favorite bands–weaklings growl, talk talks ambience, husker du’s balzyness, hilary duffs catchiness, there all here. These cd’s are all over the place musically, yet it always sounds similar; theres a post feel to everything on here, like stretched out to it peak and only keeping the refreshing parts of each genre. The crescendos of post-rock without the noodling, black metal drumming without predictability, fucked up vocals that never detract from the music. The main criticism of these guys is they have too much filler- thats from a black metal perspective, so its valid. Go in with no apprehensions, and youll want to camp out in their cave, huddled in animal skins while rob does his old cover himself in blood trick.

Strummed and struck, picked and rubbed, weaving a totally hypnotic groove, on the first track it takes the form of a raw blues jam, the melody looped and repeated mantra like while Diallo, wails over the top, his voice deep and intense, as powerful and raw as the music beneath it. The two trade verses, Pekos offering up a never ending patter, almost scatting, while Diallo swoops in every few measures and destroys, his delivery a super intense almost toasting. The first track has been stuck in the cd player on repeat since we first got this in. All the intensity and emotion of Konono No.1 and the same sort of festive vibe, as well as the same song structure, a looped cyclical jam that could go on forever and ever and oh how we wish it would. The second track is like a slowed down back porch version of the first. The strings weaving a loping laid back backdrop, with simple percussion, and the same vocal interplay, Pekos more subdued, Diallo a gorgeous intense roar.Besides the first track, the other highlight is probably the track, a sprawling midtempo jam, way in the background, simple metallic rhythms and softly strummed guitars, while over the top, another guitar is pounded in and out of tune, warbling drunkenly, intertwined with the vocals, eventually dropping most of the melody and becoming another percussion instrument, emitting occasional squalls of tangled melody before returning to its motorik pulse, until eventually evolving into an almost James Brown like detuned funk jam, with the crowd watching going wild. So intense and emotional.

Stephen O’Malley & Z’ev – Magistral [Southern Lord 2007]

Yet another Sunn 0))) related project, once again it’s Stephen O’Malley, who here is teamed up with legendary percussionist Z’ev as Magistral. But this is way more high concept that just some old fashioned drum / guitar jam, instead, O’Malley recorded a guitar solo, 8 minutes and 42 seconds long to be precise, and Z’ev then took those recordings and worked them over, according to the liner notes he was responsible for “renderings, recodings, percussion and submixes”. This is an amazing disc of abstract soundscaping and stretched out blackened ambience. It’s difficult to pick out any remaining bits of guitar actually, as Z’ev has rendered them completely indistinct, a wash of crumbling distortion, long expanses of grind and scrape, strange high end shimmer over haunting metallic oscillations, creepy burblings and black sonic ooze, what sounds like workmen hammering on air conditioning ducts across the street, and thick glacial flows of molten low end rumble. The sound reminds us quite a bit of the most tranquil Wolf Eyes moments, a sort of austere, slightly industrial landscape of barren sound, especially the final track, where Z’ev finally joins in with the tribal percussion, transforming a buzzing drone into some sort of haunting pagan ritual.

Comes in a colour hand-screened gatefold sleeve with die-cut inner, printed clear inner sleeve and insert and pressed on very heavy vinyl: “What started out as an effort to issue some live recordings from the Fig. 5/Liberation era slowly turned into what is the most recent live recordings made available. The free jazz tinged freak-outs you were going to hear have been shelved so we could bring you these three swirling moments in time. But beyond the kick ass harmonica, this band just rules, huge convoluted riffing, strange mathy rhythms, thick swells of sound, killer complex emotional and heavy. Long stretches of dark brooding ambience, blissed out rhythmic shimmer, warm guitars over martial drums, slow building guitar jangle over mesmerizingly propulsive drumming, slippery slide and minor key melodic finger picking, there’s really nothing not to love. The guys take a sound that’s becoming more and more tired and turn it inside out and upside down, making their own sort of POST post rock, intense and alive and vibrant and super exciting.

Owl Xounds – Teenagers from Mars

There’s a muscular attack and a commitment to pushing past mere dialogue and interaction that sounds most like Black Flag at their jamminest, while the actual weight of the constituent parts has as much to do with Red-era King Crimson as it does with Sunny Murray’s work with ESP-Disk. I dunno, but it almost feels to me as if post fire music played with a post punk/noise mindset may finally be on the up. So release your grip on your own brain and reconnect yr ass to the cosmos. A split release between Wooden Wand’s Mad Monk imprint and Kriney’s Colour Sounds Recordings. Highly recommended.

The Cherry Point/Mania/The Rita/Sewer Election/Treriksröset – Total Slitting of Throats

What these guys have crafted here is a long track clocking in at 66 minutes of total crunchy constant noise. my current favorite psych/noise band, site needed some spit and balls after all this indie stuff. Totally accessible, even if you havent heard a noise song or know what noise is, its crazy instrumentals and killer ambient stuff. time to pass out.

Operator Dead….Post Abandoned

Sometimes the drones on Operator Dead scream until it sounds like the record’s lungs are going to implode. At others, they’re pretty, if not quite pastoral. (Occasionally, the band goes for both extremes on the same track.) Over the 19 minutes of opening track “When the Tripods Came”, Yeh and crew build a resonant buzzing like a tamboura run through a distortion pedal– you assume this is Yeh’s violin, but the density of the music makes a mockery of figuring out which sound comes from which player– that’s joined by pounding, tribal drums and free flurries of cymbal by Tremaine. The electronics sound like everything from bagpipes squawking through crappy reverb to the traditional roar of psychedelic guitar fuzz. The track’s opening half is actually intoxicating– almost inviting– but it slowly tangles into a climax of ear-bleed noise before painfully, and abruptly, shorting out.

A totally mind blowing collection of artists, representing the state of ‘noise’ today. 55 bands, 3 cds, totally elaborate over the top packaging, a project so epic it took three labels to make it happen, but now that it’s done, it was so worth the wait. So utterly gorgeous. And while we’d be the first to admit that we were a bit scared by the idea of a triple cd noise compilation, the actual state of ‘noise’ is actually that much of it is quite beautiful, almost all of it is surprisingly listenable, and a lot of it is downright lovely. It’s not just hissing jets of white noise these days. Textural and moody, rhythmic and abstract, it might be more fair to describe this as an experimental comp rather than a noise one, but to be fair, many of these tracks are noisy in their own way. And like any comp, it’s the bands you know and love that suck you in: Burning Star Core, Guilty Connector, Dead Machines, Thurston Moore, Strotter Inst., Leslie Keffer, Earwicker, Destructo Swarmbots, Mike Shiflet, Hum Of The Druid, Sword Heaven, The Cherry Point, Herpes O Deluxe, Travis Ryan (from Cattle Decapitation), Panicsville, Gerritt & John Wiese, but what keeps you in, and earns repeat listens, is the chance to discover new weird music from bands you’ve never heard before: OP Rechts, Bet Hell, Josh Lay, Cotton Museum, Big China & Little Trouble, Forbes Graham, Small Life, Lovae, The Heirs Of Rockafeller, Perfect Teeth, Tonight Golden Curls, Black Meat, Door, Noveller, Jason Zeh, Teeth Collection, tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE, Skullcaster, Steve Bradley, Wether, Mermaids, Wet Hearts, Magicicada, Oblong Box, Aughra, Donna Parker, Robert Inhuman, Yellow Tears, 1thousand Holy Shards, Back From Iraq, Sick III Cell, Scutopus, Ben S. Jacobs, Blango, Decimation Blvd., Ultra//Vires, Darsombra, Subterrane. Phew. We’ve yet to make it through all three discs, but what we’ve heard so far is awesome. So much so that every time we listen to this, someone comes up to see what we’re listening to, after almost every song. In fact just while this review was being written, Allan asked what was playing 3 or 4 times. The tracks are that varied, and that good. It might be a bit daunting to do a track by track description, just know that we’ve listened to almost the whole thing, and loved pretty much all of it, even the noisiest tracks. And it’s incredibly well sequenced too, the tracks are matched and segue into each other as if it were and album proper, not a compilation. So good. Our faith in noise may have been restored!

And we haven’t even discussed the packaging yet. A sturdy rectangular box with a removable lid, held together by a thick textured paper obi, gold metallic ink on red, inside, 4 thick cardstock inserts, each with unique red and gold art on one side, while on the other, one contains liner notes, the other three the track listings and band info, with the cds affixed to the center, and each cd is adorned with unique and different art. Wow. It truly is gorgeous looking, so much so that it’s hard to believe it’s only sixteen bucks. But we’re not complaining. Not sure how limited this is, but something this nice and labor intensive, we’re guessing they won’t be around for long. Essential listening for lovers of modern music, noise and otherwise, and recommended especially for even the most noise-phobic among you…
